SIR Navigation Principles
The following picture illustrates
the various navigation modes available in SIR
The application system redocumented by SIR is seen as a hierarchical organization
of systems and sub-system. Physical components are assigned to this tree organization.
A component may belong to several domains.

Users have 4 navigation modes available:
1 - The hierarchical mode, also called "Portfolio" mode, where users navigate through the hierarchical organization of the application system (as defined by the application experts) up to the components level. Using this mode allows new comers to discover and to understand the application structure.
2 - The Expert Analysis mode allows users to answer specific questions such as displaying a transaction, identifying all files used in update mode, etc.
3 - The Direct Access mode prompts the user for a name to be used by the "search utilities" which displays the component(s). Users can restrict the scope of the search.
4 - The hypertext mode allows, using the web metaphor, to navigate from one component to another just with a mouse click.
